Unforgettable Powder at Solitude Mountain Resort
Tuesday, January 29th, 2008
I remember my first winter living in Utah during the 1996-97 season. During the month of January there was a string of 18 powder days in a row where each day it would dawn blue skies with fresh snow from the night before. Then during the afternoon it would begin to cloud up and start to snow through the night until the next morning when it would dawn bluebird skies once again. It was a dream come true for any skier or snowboarder.
After about 10 days of this it was somewhat absurd. The days started to blur together as typically unforgettable deep powder runs were lost thanks to the volume of unforgettable runs. Nearly every local who dared call himself a local came out of the woodwork to participate in this once in a lifetime event. Little did we know that it would happen 11 years later.
While driving to Solitude this morning my mind drifted back to those January days of 1997. You see, when I went to bed last night there was no way I could have imagined the sun coming up to a blue sky. Solitude had reported 11″ yesterday and then last night received another 14″. All I could do was laugh.
Solitude, as the name implies, is one of those amazing sleeper ski resorts whose bigger neighbors of Snowbird, Alta and Brighton seem to capture the attention of visiting skiers and locals alike, while leaving this little gem void of the masses. This was made evident during my last run before lunch when I was still getting fresh tracks.
Evidence of an amazing day at Solitude Resort:

If you’re interested in getting away from the masses you should consider renting a rustic cabin in Big Cottonwood Canyon from Utah Vacation Homes. It sleeps 10 and has 3 bedrooms - perfect for a true winter vacation without the hustle bustle.
