Antelope Island – One of Salt Lake City’s many attractions
Wednesday, August 26th, 2009The other day I overheard a group talking about wildlife photography and how Salt Lake is such a great place for wildlife viewing. At this point in their conversation I was in total agreement. Their conversation proceeded with how close Yellowstone or Jackson Hole is and if you don’t want to drive that far you can always go to the zoo. I was floored! It kills me that people don’t realize how much Salt Lake City has to offer, especially those who live in the area. I’ve seen moose, coyotes, bison, deer, beaver, eagles etc just 5 to 40 minutes from my house.
It had been over a year since I last visited Antelope Island, and their conversation gave me a challenge to find wildlife without driving an hour from my house. For me Antelope Island has always been a sure bet to find wildlife, and my recent trip to Antelope Island was no exception.
Antelope Island is just 15 miles long and 4.5 miles wide and has a herd of 500 to 700 bison. With that many bison on an island it’s not that hard to spot at least one. Keep in mind they are still wild animals, but they have been around enough people that they don’t seem to be afraid. Here is a shot from my car window, no I didn’t zoom in. You can even see his tongue.
